Mirez Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 FINALLY sourced one, well the main bit - gonna have to mod the old wheel to accept the new unit until I can locate a proper wheel but I've been missing remote radio controls since the Mk1 Galaxy went - why oh why Ford didn't make this more common place, especially when you consider cars like the Ka and Fiesta have radio controls mounted on the column as standard yet the bigger wider Galaxy hasn't any... weird. Anyway this is the final piece of the retrofit stuff I have to do and then the car will then have every optional extra from both VAG and Ford :P Lots more involved then previous MFSW's I've fitted to Ford's as its mainly VAG components so there is a bloody controller to wire in rather then just have the radio/nav to do it but on the other hand, because its a VAG and not Ford it's illuminated so there's one plus. seatkid Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Anyway this is the final piece of the retrofit stuff I have to do and then the car will then have every optional extra from both VAG and Ford :) Normally I would be tempted to say how sad, but I honestly feel that the MK1/2 Shalaxy is just about the best MPV package ever made. All the new models I've seen keep me thinking the same "my old alhambra does it better". Of course its not perfect and there are bigger, quieter etc etc MPV's around. But none has the design balance of the Mk1/2. Good examples are indeed worth hanging on to. Quote
Mirez Posted October 6, 2011 Author Report Posted October 6, 2011 Good job other peoples opinions mean very little to me then! http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif I would agree though, having driven the new Galaxy and S-Max neither quite do it, the Galaxy somehow feels more like a van now and the S-max just isn't versatile enough. I took a new Alhambra out the other day which was a complete disappointment, if you ever wanted to drive a car which had 0% flair or character thats the one to go for - there isn't even any feedback from the steering system it just bubbles about... The only benefit I can see to any of the new ones is the uprated power and smoothness of a more modern diesel - however it will take a fair bit more then just that to tempt me away from the Mk2. Hopefully in 2014 when the New Galaxy is released there may be some improvements which make me want it. On another note this one is at 75K now and only being used at the weekends so I did toy with the idea of selling up but having thought about nearly all other models out there there is literally nothing that I fancy changing to and exactly as you say, finding a decent second hand one should I want to buy back would be tricky. Mirez Posted October 24, 2011 Author Report Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) Well the retrofit is complete... certainly not one of the easiest retros I've done! For anyone else thinking of doing this you'll need:MFSW Switches - there are 3 types to pick (Stereo controls only / Stereo + Cruise Control / Navigation + Cruise Control ) MFSW Clock SpringController 453Indicator stalk without the cruise function General Notes:For all real purposes there are only two sets of switches -radio without cruise and radio with cruise -the only difference is the "MOD" button is removed for the navigation version. The non MFSW steering wheel can be easily adapted to take the additional controls - you DONT need to replace the wheelThe non MFSW airbag can have the switch assembly replaced to add the additional controls - you DONT need to replace the airbag! The clockspring unit will have to be changed - the new unit needs 4 additional wires taken to it not just one like most other VW'sThe normal MFSW relay used by other VW's of this age including the Sharan and Alhambra (Relay 452) won't work - you need a specific Galaxy one (Relay 453) which is probably the biggest stumbling block is sourcing the parts. 452 will see the nav unit ok and can be talked to with VagCom but it can't talk to the controller within the Galaxy Steering Wheel ;)Although 453 has what looks like a VAG number on it ( 7M5 907 487 ) none of the VAG dealers (Seat, VW, Skoda or Audi) can see it or order it - its £240 from Ford!!!!!!Nobody seems to have the details of the soft coding for this controller. By luck: 01028 is a softcode that works for the cruise and nav unit, 00017 seems to be for non cruise cars - you are on your own for anything else though! Edited October 24, 2011 by Mirez Quote

Have you got the rear quarter window mounted christmas trees that illuminate when you brake? And what about the illuminated taxi sign on the roof? ;) Quote

seatkid Posted October 25, 2011 Report Posted October 25, 2011 Not yet... still looking for the illusive fluffy dice. :)I believe fluffy dice are illegal. They fail them on the MOT unless they are OEM and fitted with washers and self levelling. ^_^ Quote
